St. Lucie County election workers are recounting early voting ballots cast Nov. 1 through Nov. 3

Machine's memory card failure causes error

Election workers are doing an emergency recount of an undisclosed number of early voting ballots because of a memory card failure.

The St. Lucie County Assistant Attorney Heather Young says there was a memory card failure in the machine counting St. Lucie County early voting ballots.

The ballots from November 1st to November 3rd are in question.

Young said the division of elections directed them to do an emergency recount even though she believes the votes were counted.

Young said the problem was known during election night and they ran the ballots in question through the machines but now are recounting them.

St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections Gertrude Walker wouldn't comment on the emergency recount.

Both Allen West's and Patrick Murphy's lawyer's are both disputing the emergency recount.
Supervisor of Elections attorney Cynthia Angelos said other machines used across the state have had these memory card errors.

She hasn't yet said the manufacturer of the machines or how to prove there weren't memory card issues on the other early voting days that aren't in question.
About 16,000 early voting ballots were reportedly from November 1st to the 3rd.
Initial notice from the St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections Office said they would be recounting all of the early voting ballots.

Angelos said Florida state statute only requires them to count the ballots in question that the memory card error was related to.
When Angelos was asked about the 1136 votes Fort Pierce Mayoral candidate Linda Hudson said the elections supervisor told her weren't counted, Angelos didn't have an answer whether it was true or not.

The St. Lucie County Supervisor of Elections Office has a noon deadline to finish the recount.
