UPDATE (Sunday morning): YouTube just informed me by email that "Your video 'Scott Brown wonders if Obama was born out of wedlock' has become popular on YouTube." - promoted by David)

Born out of wedlock? Really??

Well, yes. During (or maybe shortly after) the 2008 Republican convention, Brown was on a panel discussion (aired on the now-defunct CN8 cable news channel) about Sarah Palin. He defended her pretty strongly, as you'd expect. But then, in the course of discussing Bristol Palin, Scott comes up with this:

Wow. Just to reiterate, in case you can't see the video: in response to the statement that Obama's mother was married when she gave birth, Scott says, "well, I don't know about that." Then he chuckles. "Uh huh huh."

Here's hoping that someone who might actually get an answer out of him (I would not include BMG in that category, so I don't think we'll bother) will ask Scott what was in his mind when he wondered aloud whether President Obama might have been born out of wedlock. UPDATE: TPM: "When contacted by TPM, Brown spokesperson Felix Browne provided this response: 'This is a non-issue. Scott's comments are being distorted by supporters of Martha Coakley who are trying to tear him down.'" No Felix, Scott's comments are being reported, not distorted. There's a difference.

I mean, maybe Brown really didn't know, and was just expressing the fact that he was unsure whether Obama's mother was married. But why would that possibility even be in his head? I took a little tour of the wingnuttosphere to find out who'd been saying what on that topic. Join me on the flip.

Turns out that a number of fringey folks, including one Andy Martin and prominent wingnut Jerome Corsi (of "Unfit for Command" fame) have been assiduously peddling the theory that Ann Dunham and Barack Obama, Sr. never actually got married. Said Martin, in July of 2008 (not long before Brown taped the interview posted above):

Barack Obama, Senior, and Anne Dunham never married. Obama knows this fact. This is also why he keeps his white grandmother a virtual prisoner; she knows too, and she won't lie.

Through the past several decades Obama has pretended he 'didn't know' the facts about his illegitimate birth. He thought he could get away with the big lie. And he almost did get away with it....

His mother was promiscuous and had a child out of wedlock, in 1961, when that was still scandalous behavior. Is this Obama's idea of 'family values?' Obviously, he has been deceiving the American people and hoping his advertising lies could overcome the truth. He has failed.

Corsi, for his part, has been keeping the faith even post-election. This post at World Net Daily, "Was Obama's birth out of wedlock?", is from September of 2009:

Was President Obama born out of wedlock in 1961? ... As WND has previously reported, the only documentation for Ann Dunham's marriage to Barack Obama, Sr., comes from their divorce documents that list the marriage date as Feb. 2, 1961.... No wedding certificate or photograph of a ceremony for Ann Dunham and Barack Obama Sr. has ever been found or published.

Etc. etc. Oh, and one more thing about World Net Daily: there, the Brown campaign actually is running advertising. It's got the "Paid for by the Scott Brown for U.S. Senate Committee" logo on it, and it's not a Google ad (though those are present on the page as well). If you want WND's full birther rundown, with Scott's ad running alongside it, here ya go (screenshot here). I was wrong about the other one; I'm not wrong about this.

In addition, there were some very complicated (and, needless to say, quite peculiar) theories floating around back in 2008 to the effect that, even if Obama's parents did get married, the marriage might have been invalid. Here's one of them, from August 11, 2008, just a couple of weeks before Brown taped the above interview:

When he was 18, Barack Obama Sr. married a woman named Kezia and had four children with her. Two of them later returned to Kenya from the United States. He never divorced her. In the US, polygamy is illegal. If you are already married, regardless of where you got married, all subsequent marriages are invalid. This is the case with the marriage of Stanley Ann Dunham and Barack Obama Sr. in February 1961. Barak Obama Jr. was born out of wedlock.

One amusing irony of this particular "out of wedlock" theory is that its creator is actually using it to argue that Obama is eligible to serve as president. In a nutshell, the incredibly convoluted theory is that even if Obama was born in Kenya or somewhere else, the fact that his mother was not legally married when she gave birth to him means that, under U.S. law in effect at the time, Obama nonetheless acquired U.S. citizenship at birth by virtue of his mother's American citizenship. Whereas, if she had been legally married to Obama Sr. but gave birth out of the country, Obama Jr. wouldn't have been a "natural born citizen" because a different law would have applied. Whew.

Did Brown know about any of this stuff? Did he take it seriously? Is that why, when someone else says that Obama's mother was married when she gave birth to him, Brown says "I don't know about that"? And if not, then what?

Dear counsel and defendants:

This will confirm my conversation with Mr. Stroh earlier today in which he advised me he had sent me a letter (he agreed to fax it, but I have not yet seen the letter).

Mr. Stroh advised me there was some doubt whether the lawsuit was on file and with this letter I am enclosing a copy of the stamped new case summary.

Mr. Stroh said that he was not yet authorized to accept notices on behalf of the defendants and stated I should serve the defendants directly with all notices until he actually files an appearance. I will respect his request.

This letter confirms in writing that agreement.

I also advised Mr. Stroh that I was seeking a hearing from the court on an emergency preliminary injunction, and Mr. Stroh would not advise me of any dates that were convenient for him.

As soon as I get a hearing date and time from the Court I will advise the defendants (but per his request not Mr. Stroh).

I will be serving all of the defendants at the Wikimedia location since that is obviously their place of business in relation to this lawsuit.

Please also be advised that in the next day or two I will be filing a complaint with the IRS concerning the political abuses by Wikimedia of its tax-exempt status to foster political attacks on “enemies” and “friends” of Barack Obama and other leftist causes and persons. That is not a proper use of a tax-exempt foundation that claims to be neutral and detached in its operations.

Obviously, by its own admissions, Wikimedia is neither neutral nor detached in its reportage and is being used as a political attack weapon by Obama’s supporters on the hard left at Wikimedia Foundation.

Mr. Stroh also advised me that the bogus entry on me would continue to be “locked” and that Wikimedia would neither remove nor allow to be corrected the lies and distortions being disseminated to influence a campaign for federal office and to undermine my efforts to find the facts and seek the truth about who Barack Obama really is.

I advised Mr. Stroh that Wikimedia might also have to register with the Federal Election Commission as a political committee due to its publication of pro and anti-Obama materials under strict control of a secret political presidium, all of which is directed at influencing a federal campaign in Illinois.

If any of the foregoing is in error, please advise me in writing.

It has been nearly six months since we have had to solicit any financial support for our efforts. The Committee’s financial resources are once again depleted.

Here is what we need:

Second National Conference:

We are convening a Second National Conference on Barack Obama’s missing birth certificate and missing high school/college/law school records. We estimate that the cost of producing the conference will be approximately $2,000, covering space rental, videotaping (for Internet posting), editing, etc. If you can contribute financially to helping us run a successful conference, please do. If you can also attend, more’s the better.

“Obama: The Hawai’i Years”:

Our short film “Obama: The Hawai’i Years” is almost ready to view. We plan to release it before the National Conference in December. We are still short of money to complete the project and are running in a deficit situation. We need $7,500 to finish the project. If we receive $10,000 we will be able to afford to post the entire film on the Internet unedited, instead of posting it on YouTube in short segments.

In the film we ask the questions that we have asked in the past, as well as making new inquiries. We offer some new, expanded answers. And we do so with pictures of Hawai’i and Obama’s early years. And, finally, we point to the unanswered questions about Barack Obama’s family history.

Even though I am very knowledgeable about Obama’s past, actually producing the script and going to Honolulu to shoot the film helped me to probe deeper into the mysteries surrounding the man. Obama’s opaque “roots” are not something that can be deciphered in one pass.

We need your financial support to do justice to the historical research we are conducting and producing.

Unlike some of Obama’s critics, I have been scrupulously honorable and honest in seeking only the truth about him, and trying to find only the facts about his past. Because of my passion for the truth and the facts, I seem to get under Obama’s skin, whereas his critics who float unsustainable theories are ignored. (NEW YORK)(December 4, 2009) Timing is everything. Earlier this week we formally announced the Second National Conference on Barack Obama’s Missing Birth Certificate and school records. As if on cue, former vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin endorsed our view that Obama should release his original birth certificate: http://www.dailykos.com/tv/w/002387/

Predictably, the mainstream media have launched attacks on Palin, using their same old lies about Barack Obama.

Ben Smith and Jed Lewison of Huffington Post (and Politico.com?) falsely claim that “FactCheck.org staffers have now seen, touched, examined and photographed the original birth certificate.” That is a bald-faced lie:

FACT: Obama’s ORIGINAL Hawai’i birth certificate has never been seen by FactCheck.Org or anyone else except possibly Dr. Chiyome Fukino of the State of Hawai’i Health Department. What Smith, Lewison and FactCheck.org saw is a laser print-out of information contained in a computer database. Nothing more. Why do these “journalists” keep lying to the public and claiming a print-out is a “copy?” Why? Whose cause are they really serving with their lies?

FACT: Neither Sarah Palin nor I are “birthers.” “Birther" is a term that the bogus media have invented to disparage persons who make legitimate inquiries about Obama’s origins in Hawai'i.

I have conducted on the scene scholarly research about Obama’s roots in Hawai’i. Our new movie could be released as early as next week: “Obama: The Hawai’i Years.”

What I have asked Hawai’i officials to do is produce their original “ribbon” copy of Obama’s 1961 birth certificate. (For those of you not old enough to know what a “ribbon copy” is, ancient devices known as "typewriters" used “ribbons” to make impressions on paper. Cormac McCarthy’s original 1963 typewriter is about to be auctioned as an antique. The original copy of a document, i.e. the one which the typewriter ribbon actually touched, was known as the “ribbon copy.”)

Hawai’i officials have never released Obama’s ribbon copy of his birth certificate, despite many demands, lawsuits, etc. I am continuing my litigation for access. Because I am currently a candidate for U. S. Senator [www.AndyforUSSenator.com], I was unable to actively pursue the litigation in August-November, but we are gearing up to go back to Hawai’i to pry loose the original, 1961 document once funds are available.

FactCheck.org does not claim that the bogus “original” they saw is in fact the 1961 document, or that their “document” is a photocopy of the original typewritten 1961 piece of paper. On its face the document purports to be nothing more than a database printout. Is this print-out a “legal” document? Yes, it is. But it is not a copy of Obama’s original birth record.

What is the significance of the missing document? The laser-printed output contains significantly less birth information than the original typewritten 1961 certificate.

So where do Sarah Palin and I on the one hand, and “birthers” differ? I have never stated that Obama was born anywhere but Hawai’i; nor, to the best of my knowledge has Governor Palin. We just want to review the original 1961 Hawai'i document to see what information Obama has concealed. It is a perfectly reasonable request to examine the original document because, love him or hate him, Obama is a figure in American history and his original birth document is a historical archive.

“Birthers,” on the other hand, have proffered wild claims that Obama was born in Kenya, or elsewhere. I have looked into these accusations and found no evidence to support them. No one has ever produced any credible or legally admissible evidence to sustain these claims. Bogus media, however like to clump everyone who wants access to Obama’s Hawai’i records as a “birther,” so they can tar and feather us with the antics of kooks such as Orly Taitz, Phil Berg and similar bunkum artists.

There is absolutely no connection between demands that Obama authorize release of what he claims is his original 1961 document and the entirely separate “birther” movement.

QUESTION: If Obama has nothing to hide, why is he still hiding the 1961 original? All he has to do is call Fukino and say “release it.”

Finally, I am gratified that both in her bestselling book and in her comments this week, Governor Palin has endorsed my efforts in 2008 to lay the unpleasant truths about Barack Obama before the American people:
